In recent years, there has been an increase in the demand for antibiotics, especially in the context of the treatment of infections in hospitalized patients with severe and chronic respiratory infections. In such cases, the availability of antibiotics that are used for their antibacterial activity has become increasingly important. In the present study, we report the results of a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study to evaluate the efficacy and safety of Augmentin-I (Mylan®) in the treatment of patients with severe and chronic respiratory infections. The study was conducted at the Hospital Universitario La Paz, La Paz, Ecuador. The study included 824 consecutive patients with severe and chronic respiratory infections, who received a total of 1,828 doses of a single oral antibiotic (Amoxicillin®) plus two intravenous or oral antibacterials. A total of 17,639 patients were treated with the antibiotic amoxicillin and 8,081 patients were treated with the antibiotic doxycycline. The overall treatment success rate for both groups was comparable. The median number of patients who received the antibiotic was 7. The mean number of patients receiving the antibiotic was 3.7. In a population of patients with mild respiratory infections, the mean number of days of antibiotic treatment was 4.6 (1.6-6.8) compared with 3.6 (2.6-5.0) in the patients with severe and chronic respiratory infections. The results of the study showed that Augmentin-I was more effective than amoxicillin and doxycycline in the treatment of severe and chronic respiratory infections in patients with mild respiratory infections. In comparison with amoxicillin, the mean number of days of antibiotic treatment was 4.9 (2.2-7.7) in the patients with severe and chronic respiratory infections and 4.8 (2.4-5.0) in the patients with mild respiratory infections. Augmentin-I was well tolerated in all groups studied and was well tolerated with few side effects, although it was not significantly more effective than amoxicillin and doxycycline. The present study showed that Augmentin-I is a safe and well tolerated antibiotic for the treatment of patients with severe and chronic respiratory infections.
Table 1. Demographics, treatment success, adverse effects, adverse events, and efficacy of amoxicillin and doxycycline in the treatment of patients with severe and chronic respiratory infectionsFig. 1. Flow diagram of the study
A total of 824 patients with severe and chronic respiratory infections were randomly assigned to receive either Augmentin-I (Amoxicillin®) plus two intravenous antibacterials or no therapy. The patients in the Augmentin-I group were significantly older than the age- and gender-matched patients in terms of age (p = 0.04). In the Augmentin-I group, there was no significant difference in the mean age between the two groups, but a significant increase in the mean age of the patients was observed in the Augmentin-I group (p = 0.05). There was no significant difference in the mean length of hospital stay between the two groups (p = 0.89). The mean number of days of antibiotic treatment was 4.6 (2.5-5.0) in the Augmentin-I group and 4.3 (3.2-5.1) in the Augmentin-I group. The mean number of days of antibiotic treatment was 3.7 (2.8-5.0) in the Augmentin-I group and 3.8 (3.2-5.0) in the Augmentin-I group. The mean number of days of antibiotics treatment was 3.7 (2.5-7.8) in the Augmentin-I group and 4.3 (3.3-5.1) in the Augmentin-I group. The mean number of days of antibiotics treatment was 4.6 (2.5-7.3) in the Augmentin-I group and 4.3 (3.1-5.0) in the Augmentin-I group. The mean number of days of antibiotics treatment was 3.7 (2.5-7.9) in the Augmentin-I group and 5.3 (4.1-7.3) in the Augmentin-I group. The mean number of days of antibiotics treatment was 4.6 (2.3-7.8) in the Augmentin-I group and 4.3 (2.1-5.0) in the Augmentin-I group. The mean number of days of antibiotics treatment was 3.7 (2.3-7.8) in the Augmentin-I group and 5.3 (4.1-7.0) in the Augmentin-I group.
